RESOLUTION No. 77-47
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF
TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA, URGING THE STATE LEGISLATURE
TO RESTORE THE CITIES' PREVIOUS 20% SHARE OF
SALES AND USE TAX REVENUE.

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State .of California, prior-
to 1974 had a sales and use tax rate of five cents per one dollar
and of that-tax one percent per dollar, which was 20% of the
taxes raised, was distributed to the cities, of the State of
California; and
WHEREAS, in 1974 the Legislature increased the sales and
ise tax rat:e from five cents per dollar to six cents per dollar,
but left the amount distributed to the cities at one cent per
dollar, thus effectively reducing, the cities' distributive share
of the revenue produced from 20% to 16-2/3%; and

WHEREAS, the cost of operations of cities has increased
and is increasing due to inflationary pressures'. in the same
manner as all other public and private activities; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature has continued to adopt measures
which impose requirements on cities of additional services at
·
additional cost to the cities, thus even further reducing
available general fund revenues.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Tustin hereby requests and urges t~he Legislature of
.the State of California to adopt legislation providing'that the
share of sales and use tax revenues distributed to cities be
restored to 20%.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the City Clerk is hereby
authorized and directed to forward a copy to each member of the
Orange County Delegation to the Legislature of the State of
'California, a copy to each city in Orange County and a copy
to the Orange County Division of the League of California cities.
