TO: PLANNING COMMISSION
FROM: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: AREA TOURS
BACKGROUND
In May of 2007 the Planning Commission requested that staff organize and schedule
van/walking tours of Old Town and other areas of the City. The purpose of the tours is to
provide the Planning Commission with an overview of various areas of the City from a
community development perspective. This perspective focuses on architecture, site and
subdivision design, planning and zoning issues, neighborhood preservation, signage, and
related topics. Issues that may be specific to an individual parcel, including specific code
enforcement violations, are avoided as these matters could be brought forward at a future date
to the Commission in your role as the Board of Appeals.
On June 12, 2007, the Planning Commission reviewed a list of areas of the City that could be
toured within a two-hour time period. The first two areas on the list, the Old Town Residential
Area and the Old Town Commercial Area were toured by the Planning Commission on August
14, 2007, and September 25, 2007, respectively. In addition, the Planning Commission toured
Tustin Legacy on March 27, 2007.
Areas remaining to be toured include Southwest Tustin, the First Street Corridor, Tustin Ranch,
Tustin Legacy, South Tustin, and others. Given the Commission's interest in continuing to
participate in tours of various areas of the City and the current level of planning and building
activity in these areas, staff has reprioritized the areas for the Planning Commission's
consideration. The revised list of areas and a map of Tustin are attached to this report.
It is anticipated that the next tour could be scheduled for March 11, 2008. In order to complete
the tour during daylight hours, we recommend that the tour begin no later than 4:00 p.m.
Please inform staff of your availability so that staff can proceed with the necessary noticing and
preparation for the tour.
