SUBJECT; TUSTIN HISTORIC REGISTER NOMINATION - 315 SOUTH C STREET
RECOMMENDATION
That the Planning Commission approve the nomination of 315 South C Street to the Tustin
Historic Register Plaque Designation Program and select the most appropriate historical
name and date of construction for the property-
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
Owners of historic homes or commercial buildings in Tustin are eligible to participate in the
City's plaque designation program, called the Tustin Historic Register. The purpose of ti:~::s
voluntary program is to recognize Tustin's historic properties, educate the public, increase
public interest in historic properties, and promote community pride. The bronze plaques
purchased through the program may be mounted or set on metal stakes. Property owners
who would like to participate are responsible for the cost, installation, and maintenance of
the plaques.
The plaques display the construction date of the building, up to two lines of text, and are
identified with the words "Tustin Historic Register." Nomination forms are obtained from
the Community Development Department. Anyone, including the Commission, may
nominate properties.
Tustin resident and Tustin Preservation Conservancy President Linda Jennings submitted
the attached nomination for the residence at 315 South C Street. Pursuant to the
procedures approved by the City Council on November 6, 2007, the nomination was
forwarded to the president of Tustin Area Historical Society. The two groups w~:~~
requested to collaborate and/or review the nomination, research the history of the property,
and to note the most appropriate historical name and date of construction.
The Preservation Conservancy transmitted information (written on the nomination) to the
Community Development Department on February 20, 2009. The Historical Society has
not provided any information pertaining to the nomination.
According to the City of Tustin 1990 Historical Survey, the California bungalow (see
Attachment C) has a C rating and was built around 1910 on property awned by the Tustin
family. Since the 1940s, the property has been owned by the Patton family.

It is recommended that "Patton House" be selected as the most appropriate historic;~l
name for the property. The date on the plaque should be "circa 1910." ' ~~

DESCRIPTIO\:
A row of dentil work adds a classical touch to the single-story home at 315 C Streec Ahoot-facing gabled roof, centered with a
small window and accented with triansular braces, caps the clapboazd-sided house. The south half of the front facade contains a
recessed porch with tapered square columns, resting on a solid clapboazd-clad railing. A double-hung window is centered in the
north half, while a matching window looks out over the front porch. Double-hung windows aze used throughout the rest of [hc
house. The front door features a large window in the top half. A matching single garage in the back has a cazsiding-clad door and
a ca. 1550 walk-in door immediately adjac;cnt to it.
SIGtiIFICA\CE:
This small house is on property owned for many years by the Tustin family. Sam Tustin inherited the large parcel of land when
his mother, Mary, died in the late teens. Elmer and Nellie Gates bought the house in 1943. Mr. Gates was the Assistant Chief of
the Santa Ana Fire Department. After they moved to Irvine in 1947, Maurice and Agnes Crockett, a retired couple, bought the
home. The house contributes to the historic streetscape of the Tustin Cultural Resources District, and has additional significance
through its associations with [he Tustin family, founders of the city.
