GRAD NITE FUNDING
SUMMARY:
Tustin High School and Foothill High School are each requesting a $2,500 donation from the
City to support Grad Nite Activities.
RECOMMENDATION:
Pleasure of the Council.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The total donation of $5,000 is not currently identified as funded in the 2001-2002 FY Budget.
Funds could be drawn from the General Fund Community Outreach Account toward this effort.
BACKGROUND:
Annually, each high school has approached the City Council for funding of this post graduation
activity. Requests from each high school have taken place since 1989. Grad Nite activities at
Tustin and Foothill High Schools willl be held on June 14, 2002, from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
The Grad Nite Activity is a registered non-profit organization that depends on donations and
fundraisers to help defray costs for student activities. This event focuses on providing a safe,
alcohol-free environment for graduating seniors. Alternative Grad Nite programs like these have
significantly reduced accidents and deaths of high school seniors in Orange County and
nationwide in the past.
The Grad Nite Committees at both high schools are made up of parent volunteers. The
committee needs help to provide a sober night of celebration for over 800 graduating seniors in
our community. George Salapsky, from Foothill High School, and Marsha Bajorek, from Tustin
High School will be in attendance at the Council meeting to answer any questions.
Attached, please find letters from the respective school summarizing their requests.
Respectfully submitted,
Director, Parks and Recreation Services

Dear Mr. Sanchez.
Last year there was some concern about the City of Tustin being involved in the Grad Nite
programs at the local high schools. The statement was made that the schools, and the sponsoring
organizations, needed to be sure to plan ahead for the events and be able to fund them.
For the past sixteen years, Tustin High School has had an outstanding on-campus celebration that
was memorable for the graduating seniors. Last year's event again resulted in a safe, drug and
alcohol free environment for our students, where they were able to spend their last night of high
school together. Post-Grads themselves have expressed how great the experience truly was for
them and how their last memories on campus were unbelievable ones.
We, the members ofthe organizing committee of this year's Tustin High School (had Nite, are
asking the City of Tustin once again to become involved in this worthwhile endeavor. We are
asking for a grant fi.om the City of Tustin to enable us to continue to provide this special night
for the approximately 470 young people graduating this year. I have been asked by our
Committee to contact you, and the members of the City Council, to request that this grant be
made. We have, over many years, provided a good return on the funds that the City has so
provided. We hope that you will ~e that this is money indeed well spent and provide funds to
support Grad Nite 2002 in line with past years.
Sincerely,
Marsha A. Bajorek?Fundraising Chairman
