On behalf of the members of our collective organizations, we are writing today to address
the Council on a matter of great concern. As noted in local news stories, there is a small
group of politically motivated individuals that have stated their intention to attempt a
recall effort against Mayor Jerry Amante. On behalf of the members of a very concerned
business community, we are disappointed that a few individuals have taken it upon.
themselves to disrupt the well-run city of'1'ustin.
The groups represented on this letter account for nearly every sector of the business
community in Tustin and greater Orange County. Our organizations have come together
to farm a coalition in support of Mayor Jerry Amante.
During his service to the residents and business of Tustin, Mayor Amante has displayed
strong leadership, prudent fiscal conservatism, a dedication to the safety of Tustin's
residents, and a steadfast commitment to the economic prosperity of Tustin's businesses,
as well as to the quality of life throughout Orange County
Mayor Amante was first elected to office in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. During that time
he has served the people of Tustin by helping to shepherd the city through devastating
economic challenges. Leadership requires that difficult decisions be made, despite the
d
level of popularity ar poll results. We expect vur elected leaders to govern, but should not
then punish them far doing so if outcomes da not meet individual agendas. Citizens have
the right to voice objections at Council meetings. A recall at this time seems more like an
abuse of the process first established to remove elected officials who had committed some
malfeasance short of criminal activity.
Mayor Amante has set the City of Tustin on a course that will help lead the way far our
County's economic recovery. It is unforhmate that the distraction of a recall has been
raised. This sets a bad precedent for future leaders who want to only be popular and not
make the hard decisions of office. It also sets Tustin on a rudderless course. Municipal
recall efforts are divisive, expensive, and extremely destructive to communities like Tustin.
The business community is hapeftrl that the voters of Tustin will see through the partisan
politics of a "vocal minority". We urge the residents of Tustin to reject this misguided
attempt to recall your respected Mayor.
Sincerely,
,.
