AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR THE PURCHASE OF TWO EMERGENCY
PORTABLE GENERATORS (ClP No. 6140)
I I I II II II
SUMMARY
Award of this contract will provide for the purchase of two (2) portable generators to supply
emergency power to the Vandenberg Well and the future reconstructed Simon Booster Station.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council award the purchase of the two emergency portable
generators to the Iow bidder, Generator Services Co., Inc., of Alta Loma, California in the amount
of $155,762.00 and authorize the Public Works Director/City Engineer to approve the purchase
order.
FISCAL IMPACT
The 2001/2002 Capital Improvement Program allocations for this project is $250,000.00.
BACKGROUND
City Council approved the specifications for the purchase of one 350 kilowatt and one 500 kilowatt
emergency portable generator, and authorized the advertisement of this project on August 6,
2001.
Subsequently, the project was advertised and no bids were received. However, the project was
readvertised and the following three bids were opened on February 19, 2002.
Generator Services Co., Inc., Alta Loma, CA ................................... $155,762.00
American Electric Co., Orange, CA ................................................. $231,660.00
Urbantec Engineers, Inc., Santa Ana, CA ........................................ $298,000.00
The Iow bid for this project is approximately 29% below the engineer's estimate of $220,000.
Generator Services Co. has proposed to supply one 400 kilowatt and one 600 kilowatt emergency
generator instead of the 350 kilowatt and 500 kilowatt units specified. These larger than specified
units are currently in Generator Services Company's inventory and can be delivered within the
specified time period. This bid has been reviewed by AKM Consulting Engineers and City staff
and has been determined to be in compliance with the specifications.
