LEAVE OF ABSENCE EXTENSION-ROMAN LOPEZ
Upon The recommendation of the City Manager, authorize extension of a leave of
absence for Roman Lopez exceeding 30 days.
RECOMMENDATION'
That the City Council authorize extension of a medical leave of absence for Roman
Lopez due to an off-the-job injury until October 26, 2000 or until he is fully released by
his doctor to return to work. The extension until October should allow sufficient time for
recuperation and to avoid additional requests for extensions.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Since Mr. Lopez has exhausted 90 days of medical leave and is not eligible for benefits
at this time, the cost to the City is not significant. The Parks and Recreation
Department filled Mr. Lopez's position to allow the department to be more productive.
Should Mr. Lopez be released to return to work with no restrictions, he will be reinstated
only if there is a vacant position available for which he qualifies. Otherwise, he will be
placed on a re-employment list.
BACKGROUND'
On October 18, 1999, the Council approved a non-industrial medical leave of absence
and Mr. Lopez was expected to return to work on March 1, 2000. Mr. Lopez's doctor is
unable to release him back to work without significant restrictions. Mr. Lopez has
requested an extension of his unpaid leave of absence to allow him more time for
recuperation.
