This organization would serve to give students from all grade levels and social-economic background a forum for them to express their feelings, viewpoints, and present constructive solutions to issues that greatly affect people of their own age, .regardless of social, ethnic, or religious differences. It v~411 also allow the young adults to exercise complete control of how the organization is operated; there will be adults involved, but their role consists of giving advice in order to act as a voice of reason when necessary. A board of students will address the needs for anyone requesting a topic, with no concerns of geographical boundaries. These topics will foster the lost art of debate in .~mefican society, which is desperately needed, and give the participants a positive avenue to express their ideas. When required, certain politicians or ~oups who are the focus of the debated issue will be invited to the discussion to express their view and possible solutions, and simultaneously given a date of resolvement in regards to the topic discussed. As time progresses with each issue investigated, we plan to select people to serve as role models in order to foster continued participation of students to speak up and address the issues that concern them the most. Through this method of peer leaders and mentors, the young adults v~411 feel more in control and will bestow upon them significance and a voice in today's society. P OINTE$ OF LIGHT N3ncv Fontainc. CA 92680 · (?14) 730-1~245 August 16, 1999 Judge Jim Gray Department L72, Superior Court The City Drive Orange, CA 92868 ' Dear Jim, In response to the growing problems facing today's youth, I want to propose the impiementation of the following inspirational programs: 1. The Ur&ed Student Congress is an organization that would serve to give studen~ from all grade levels and social-economic background a. forum for them to express their feelings, challenge adult views, and constructive solutions to issues that gready mT'feet people of their own age, regardless of soci~, ernmc, or religious differences. As such, the long-term goal is to encou:z~e studen;z to take an active, positive role in society and to se,we as role mo~els to others and to challenge issues deemed unimportant or not worthv. Mtmh of this would o~ur through formal debates held in various Iocatiopz. The enclosed description goes into great detail as to the set up and opera, on of the Congess. . I would like to see an hour long televised program devoted to issues develoaed by students and young adults. The first half-hour will focus on a partic~ar topic that the students wish tO address. They will formulate an a~enda with a particular goal in mind and address the issue to a public official o~ some representative whom is closely related to the topic. The purpose bein~ to resolve the matter or create the steps necessary Io effectively bring .abou~ a 'real world' solution to the issue addressed. It also directly challenges our public officials to be held accountable for what they declare publicly,- while d~Sng the students a voice. _The second half-hour will center on phone calls devoted to indix-iduMs or ~oups requesting assistance for themselves or' loved ones. This allows those without the means the. ability to directly access .help through the hotiine by communicating to the viewing public. Yet, for this pm_m-am ~o be successful the children must have the fr~dom to choose the topics they wish to tackle. Adult supervisors will be present to solely guide the. m and adx.Sse, not to inxeffere or overrun the show. e In the near future I Nan on having the Grand Academy Awards for Human Servim to Childrer,'- 'Fnis pro_exam would honor all those who have made a PO] NTE$ OF LXGHT Nancy Font-',ine. Schools, church groups, and other various organizations based upon their individual achievements would nominate these exceptional persons. In the past, we have enlisted the aid of numerous celebrities by requesting donations that will be auctioned in order to raise funds for the event. We had a favorably response by nearly all who were contacted and the 15rogram was quite successful for all of those involved; especially for those who were finally recognized for there outstanding effort in triumphing in their lives and helping to better the lives of others. These programs only serve as a stepping stone to the true goal' giving our young adults responsibility and a voice that counts in society. They are the forgotten citizens of our Nation and their concerns need some kind of a positive forum for a productive expression o/ideas. Othervfise, some might choose other non-constructive avenues to vent frustrations at the issues that negativeiy affect their iive~.
