HomeMy WebLinkAbout13 RED SHIRT FRIDAYAgenda Item 13 Reviewed AGENDA REPORT City Manager Finance Director i/A MEETING DATE: JUNE 18, 2013 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL FROM: CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE SUBJECT: RED (REMEMBER EVERYONE DEPLOYED) SHIRT FRIDAY SUMMARY: The Red Shirt Friday program was designed to show support for military service members in the community, throughout the U.S. and serving abroad. The program is recognized nationally amongst various organizations, private businesses and public entities. Public entities who proclaim support of Red Shirt Friday, encourage residents, visitors and employees to wear red on Fridays to honor veterans and active duty armed forces personnel. Attached is Resolution No. 13-53, declaring every Friday in the City of Tustin to be Red Shirt Friday. Pleasure of the City Council FISCAL IMPACT: None A ,Tqj'jT In 1945, the Red Shirt Friday program originated during WWII to show support of the military as they defended our country. This has not been an organized event until recently. Currently there are six cities in Orange County who have proclaimed to support Red Shirt Friday. The participating cities are as follows: Yorba Linda, Santa Ana, Brea, La Habra, Westminster and Orange. RESOLUTION NO. 13-53 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA DECLARING EVERY FRIDAY IN THE CITY OF TUSTIN TO BE "RED SHIRT FRIDAY" Whereas, Red Shirt Friday is a nationwide initiative that visibly demonstrates support for the men and women in uniform; and Whereas, by wearing red every Friday, the City of Tustin is announcing that we are grateful to our soldiers past, present, and future for their bravery and sacrifice; and Whereas, many are dying defending this great country we love and call home, and without them we would not have the liberty of living in a free country; and Whereas, Red Shirt Friday is not just to give thanks to the millions that serve our country, but to show appreciation for their acts of selflessness and that they will never be forgotten; and Whereas, the City of Tustin encourages residents of our patriotic community to join us in wearing red on Fridays to honor veterans, active duty armed forces personnel, and troops that continue to sacrifice for our benefit. Now, Therefore, the City Council proclaims each Friday in the City of Tustin to be "Red Shirt Friday," and urge residents, visitors, and employees to show support to servicemen and women by wearing red on Fridays.
