HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT SUBdECTizENSUS 2000 UPDATE SUMMARY: For the past several months, the Community Development Department has been working with the U.S. Census Bureau bt preparationfor Census 2000. The Census is an intportant community effort because for each person not counted by the census appro.rimately $100.00 ht attnual federal fttttdi/tg ix lost. The Community De,,elopment Department has prepared this report to update the Ci0, Couttcil ott the most recent activities relatitt~ to Cettsus 2000. RECOMMENDATION That the City Council receive and file this report. DISCUSSION The following discussion highlights recent activities related to Census 2000: Local Update of Census Addresses The City has received some of the materials for the supplemental Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program. According to the Census Bureau, the remaining materials will be transmitted to the City within one week. The City will have six weeks to review the information. Because of the Bureau's error and delay in counting significant portions of Tustin, the Census Bureau has offered to provide the City of Tustin with on site personnel assistance to expedite the address review. The review process will involve checking every residential address, recent subdivisions and subdivisions anticipated to be completed by April 1, 2000 (Census Day). Partnership and Promotion - Complete Count Committee The Census Bureau has encouraged communities to establish complete count committees and implement various promotional activities. The Counb' has invited the City-of Tustin to participate in their Complete Count Committee. The kiCk-off meeting for the Orange County Compiete Count Committee originally planned for May was rescheduled to July, and has now been postponed t~ late September. The County has not determined the actual meeting date.
