The Orange COtmty Fire Authority and the City of Tustin will present a Certificate of Commendation to Ron
Walde Monday evening (Augustl6) at the regularly scheduled Tustin City Council meeting at 7 p.m..
Walde, who works for the Tustin Public Works Department, obscrvcd smoke and flames corning from a
muRi-vehiclc accident on June 30 at the corner of Prosl~=ct Avenue and Thcodora Drive in Tustin. He took
a garden hose from a nearby residence and helped to contain thc ~ until cmcrgcncy crews from thc Orange
County Fire Authority arrivext on sce~.
&s a resuk of his actions, OCFA personnel where able to concentrate all of their resources on the critically
injured patients when they arrived. OCFA Division Four Chief Buck Henderson will make the presentation.
Certificate of Commendation

W~nereas, the Orange County Fire AUthority (OCFA) established the Certificate of Commendation
as the Authority's award to recognize individuals who provide valuable assistance to either
members of the community or the OCFA during an emergency; and
Whe~ on June 30, 1999 you were working for the Tustin Public Works Department when you
obsemed smoke and flames coming from a multi-ear vehicle accident near the corner of Prospect
Avenue and Theodora Drive in Tustin; and
Whereas, with little regard for your own personal safety, you used a garden .hose from a nearby
residence to help control the fire until units from the Orange County Fire Authority arrived on
scene; and
Whereas, your quick thinking and heroic actions helped to contain this fire and kept it from
spreading to other vehicles so when personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority arrived on
scene they were able to concentrate all their resources on the critically injured patients.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Orange County Fire Authority, commends you, Ron
Walde, for your heroic actions and wishes you well in all your future endeavors.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD PRESENTATION
SUMMARY: A request to present four (4) $1000 awards to the Scholar-Athlete Scholarship
winners from Foothill and Tustin High Schools upon the recommendation of the Parks and
Recreation Commission.
RECO1VE~~ATION:
Present scholarship awards to each of the four recipients from Tustin and Foothill High Schools.
BACKGROUND:
On June 21, 1999 City Council apprOved a proposal from the Parks and Recreation Commission to
award a scholarship to a male and female student from Tustin and Foothill High Schools. Council.
allocated a $1000 award be presented to each winner and the presentation take place at a future
Council meeting.
DISCUSSION:
Ten students from Tustin and Foothill High Schools applied for the City's Scholar Athlete Award.
A sub-committee consisting, of A1 Murray, Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Stan Lewis, Parks
and Recreation Commissioner and Donnie Rafter, a community resident, independently reviewed
each of the applications. Recommendations from the sub-committee were conclusive in
determining the following winners.

Parks and Recreation Commissioner A1 Murray and staff members Patrick Sanchez and Darin
