HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/WATER SERVICE DIVISION SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO SOLICIT BIDS FOR HYDRAULIC HAMMER SUMMARY Authorize the City Clerk to advertise and solicit bids for the purchase and installation of a hydraulic hammer on a City-owned backhoe for use by the Public Works Department/Water Service Division. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Clerk to advertise and solicit bids for the purchase and installation of one new hydraulic hammer on a City-owned backhoe. FISCAL IMPACT The hydraulic hammer is budgeted in Fiscal Year 2002~03 under the Water Division's construction and maintenance fund, account number 70-452-9850. The total amount budgeted for this purchase is $20,000. BACKGROUND When excavating in streets, alleys and easements, Water Service workers use a ninety-pound jackhammer to cUt into the pavement. In some cases, the pavement may exceed twelve inches in thickness. The jackhammer does not have sufficient horsepower, and does not have a tool bit large enough to make cutting thick asphalt and concrete pavement an efficient operation. The hydraulic hammer, which will be mounted directly onto a City-owned backhoe, will allow for a much more efficient removal of street pavement sections, and reduce the possibility of injuries. The hydraulic hammer is also equipped with a noise buffer that will reduce construction noises at the job site. /~..Tim D.~Serlet Director of Public Works/City Engineer Brian A.
