POLICE DEPARTMENT
DISPOSITION OF SURPLUS CITY VEHICLE
RECOMMENDATION
That Council authorize the sale of a used marked police vehicle to Irvine Urified School
District for $3,500.
FISCAL IMPACT
$3,500 revenue
BACKGROUND
Unit 22, a 1992 Caprice has been replaced in the police department's marked vehicle fleet and
is no longer needed by the City.
The Irvine Unified School District has contacted us requesting to purchase this vehicle for
$3,500. In 1992, the Irvine UNified School District purchased two of our surplus police units
for use in their campus security program and this unit is requested for replacement of one of
those vehicles. The department is changing fxom. Chevrolet to Ford and, therefore, the
emergency equipment in the Chevrolet is no longer usable in the new police units. Irvine
would also like to have the PA system, light-bar cage, and console included in this acquisition,
in that they are no longer usable.
Maintenance advises that $3,500 is a fair price for the unit. It is recommended the sale be
authorized.

Dear Captain Wakeffield:
Back in July of 98, I wrote a letter to Chief Foster about purchasing one of your surplus police
units for use in our security department.
I met with Alan Guilder yesterday and looked at unit #22, a 1992 Caprice, the last of the "White
Whales." The District is interested in purchasing this unit end offers 5;3,500.00. If it is possible, We
would like to retain as much of the accessory equipment as possible, such as light bar, switching
equipment, console, cage and Public address system etc. It is my understanding that existing
equipment may not be usable in the new units. This would save us significant dollars in re-
equipping the unit.
The District plans to repaint the unit white and affix Irvine Unified School District Security logos
to side panels. The District understands that if our offer is accepted the vehicle will be sold on an
"As-Is" basis. If the purchase is possible, Please comaot me at (949) 936-5350
Thank you for considering our request.

Dear Chief Foster:
In January of 1992, The Irvine Unified School District purchased two surplus police units fi.om the
City of Tustin for use in our security department. It is now time for us to replace these vehicles and
we are interested in purchasing two of your surplus units.
I have talked to Allen Gallagher at the City Maintenance Department, and he indicated that five
units would be coming out of service in late July or early August. The District is interested in
purchasing two units when they become available. If it is possible, We would like to retain as much
of the accessory equipment as possible, such as lighting, switching equipment, console, cage and
Public address system. It is my understanding that existing equipment may not be usable in the new
units. This would save us significant dollars in re-equipping the surplus units'. The District plans to
paint each unit white and affixed with District Security logos. If a purchase is possible, Please
contact me at (949) 559-1936.
Thank you for considering our request.
