FISCAL IMPACT' The Commission is requesting that $2000 be appropriated to fund a scholarship award. BACKGROUND: At its April 16 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission Scholarship Sub- Committee proposed awarding a scholarship to a male and female student-athlete. A monetary award of $1000 for each recipient was suggested by the Commission. To be considered for the award, candidates must have senior standing in a local high school and are committed to attending college in Fall 1998. In addition, the candidates must have: Participated at the varsity level in a high school sport or at the regional, State or national level in an amateur sport. Participated in community service work as a volunteer for a school, City, or non-profit group event, project or service. · A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. · If approved, applications for the award will be forwarded to the athletic directors at Tustin and Foothill High Schools. The athletic directors will circulate the applications to students meeting the minimum' criteria. The Commission Scholarship Sub-Committee will evaluate all applications and letters of recommendation in selecting the male and female award winners. The awards presentation is proposed for the June 19 commission meeting. Additional information regarding the proposed award, selection process, and criteria are attached. A "draft" scholarship application is also included. ATTACHMENTS: Scholar-Athlete Award Information Sheet Scholar-Athlete Award Application CITY OF TUSTIN PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD Purpose The Scholar Athlete Award is proposed by the City of Tustin Parks and Recreation Commission to recognize the outstanding athletic and scholastic achievement of two high school seniors (male and female). Award A $1000 scholarship and plaque are proposed as awards to be presented to a male and female scholar athlete. Selection Process The award recipients will be selected by the scholarship sub-committee, which is comprised of three members of the Park and Recreation Commission. All candidates for the scholar-athlete award must submit a scholarship application and two letters of recommendation. The scholarship award must be utilized for college related expenses (i.e. books, tuition, housing). The sub-committee will select the award winners by reviewing and scoring each candidate's application and letters of recommendation. Criteria To be considered for the Scholar Athlete Award, candidates must have: Senior standing in high school with plans to attend college in Fall 1998. b) Participated at the varsity level in a high school sport, or participated at a regional, state or national level in an amateur sport, not conducted at the high school level ( i.e. ice hockey). c) Participated in community service work as a Volunteer for a school, City, or a non-profit group event, project or service. d) A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Timeline To award the scholarships by the end of the current school year, the activities must be accomplished by the specified date: May 4- Scholarship proposal on City Council agenda May 5 - Distribution of scholarship information and applications to high schools (If approved by Council) June 1 - Deadline for applications to be turned in June 8-11 - Review and evaluate applications June 19 - Present awards at Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting CITY OF TUSTIN PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION SCHOLAR-ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Nanle Address City. List and describe any' volunteer work you have done in the community? . Two letters of recommendation are required of each applicant. Coaches, teachers, athletic directors, principals, employers and community leaders are an excellent source for these letters.
