RESOLUTION NO. 14 -18
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUSTIN,
CALIFORNIA DECLARING THE CITY OF TUSTIN A PURPLE HEART
CITY
Whereas, all veterans have made sacrifices for their countrymen, having left
jobs, educational opportunities and loved ones; and
Whereas, many veterans have suffered injury or death to secure the freedom of
our nations for future generations; and
Whereas, in 1782, the Purple Heart was first established by George Washington,
then General and Commander -in -Chief of the Continental Army, as the Badge of
Military Merit to be awarded to any soldier, regardless of rank, who performed a
singularly meritorious action; and
Whereas, in 1932, upon the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth, the
Purple Heart was received as a medal recognizing American soldiers wounded or killed
on the line of duty and was emblazoned with George Washington's profile and coat of
arms; and
Whereas, on April 12, 2012, the State of California became the first state to
designate itself a "Purple Heart State," in recognition of the sacrifices of Californian
veterans, especially those who were wounded or killed in the line of duty; and
Whereas, Orange County is home to more than 120,000 veterans, the third
largest veteran population in the State of California; and
Whereas, Orange County is also home to more than 400 living recipients of the
Purple Heart Medal, of which 123 are members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart;
and
Whereas, the City of Tustin and its citizens wish to honor and thank the veterans
who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty for their selfless sacrifice to the
United States of America, the State of California, the County of Orange, and the City of
Tustin.
Now, Therefore, the City Council proclaims the City of Tustin a Purple Heart City.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
