HUSTON, CITY MANAGER COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT FEE WAIVER - DINOSAUR DASH SUMMARY: The Tustin Public Schools Foundation is requesting City Council to waive staff, equipment and permit fees for the 1997 Dinosaur Dash. RECOMMENDATION: Pleasure of the City Council FISCAL IMPACT: In 1996, the costs to the city for Public Works staff and equipment totalled approximately $4,200. Police Department costs in 1996 were approximately $850. The 1997 staff expenses are not budgeted and Will be considered as overtime. DISCUSSION: The Tustin Public Schools Foundation will be hosting the sixth annual Dinosaur Dash on Sunday, November 16, 1997. The event has served as a major fundraiser for the Foundation. The 1996 event saw over 1,000 participants competing in the adult 5K and 10K races. Approximately 1,500 children participated in the 2K races. Recreation Services Supervisor Darin Loughrey will serve as staff liaison for the 1997 event. City staff from the Police and Public Works will handle traffic control. In addition to City staff and equipment, the 'Foundation is requesting that the City Council waive all fees for permits. A copy of this request is included as an attachment. A representative from the Tustin Public Schools Foundation is in attendance at tonight's meeting to answer any questions you or the Council may have." Mr. Darin Loughrey City of Tustin 300 Centennial Way Tustin, CA 92680 Re: Dinosaur Dash 7 Dear Darin: It's hard to believe, but it is again time to prepare for the Dinosaur Dash. Each of the past six Dashes has been so successful that we are planning another. This year, the event will be held Sunday, November 16, 1996, from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Tustin Market Place. Again this year, my duties include working with the City to obtain the necessary permits, waivers of fees and costs, and to be the contact person for you and :< ..... ,:, s~,.-:-:,:., sp,rli,o_ther city staff. The event should be substantially the same as last year in terms of its impact on traffic and City resources. We will have the traditional 2K and 5K events along with the 1 OK. I the traffic plans that were employed last year worked well. As for the other assistance we have received from the City in years past, our request this year is nearly identical. As far as permits are concerned, last year you took charge of this process and expedited the permits. Will you be able to do this again? Also, in the past, you have been kind enough to work with Mr. Huston and the City Council to have our request for a waiver of fees and costs placed on the Council agenda. We would ask for your assistance in this regard again this year. I will be unavailable to attend the July meetings of the City Council, but I can appoint somebody to appear at the Council meeting to answer any questions.
