During the past five years, the City Council has approved donations in the following amounts: 1992 $2,500 1993 2,500 1994 2,750 1995 3,000 1996 3,000 Mr. Burns will be present at the May 19, 1997, City Council meeting to answer questions from the City Council. Valerie Crabill Chief Deputy City Clerk Brucc L. Burns l ~639 Redhill Drive Tustin, California 92780 (714) 731-6107 May 12, 1997 ............. .. Tustin City Council Attn: Honorable Jeff Thomas 301 Centennial Way Tustin, Ca. 92780 Dear Sir. For the past eleven years parents and community volunteers have put on an all night celebration for Tustin High School graduating seniors. This tradition wag ql'arted as an answer to the growing number of alcohol and drug related accidents and deaths that occur as a result of unsupervised graduation celebrations. -, Grad Nite is a registered non-profit organization, we depend on donations and fund-raisers to help defray the cost of the party. Approximately 80% of our budget is generated from the sale of tickets to the graduates. However this organization solicits donations from the community at large in order to maintain an affordable admission price. It would be a shame that a graduate lost his/her life because they lacked the price of admission to this safe environment. In keeping with a theme, voted on by the graduates, we decorate the school. This year's theme is "An evening in Paris" (Paris of 1890). These decorations are constructed by dedicated volunteers who believe in offering a safe enviomment. Some of these volunteers have no students attending Tustin High School, but feel a strong sense of community involvement. Games, food and entertainment are provided from 9:30 pm until 5:30 am. Over the years some criticism has been voiced over the yearly donation made by the city to this worthwhile cause. To that criticism, I would ask, what other program guarantees the safety of more than 300 young adults? I would be happy to answer any questions you may have in regards to this event during my appearance at the next scheduled council meeting on May 19, 1997 Thank you for your time and consideration. Very truly yours, Bruce L. Bums Chairman Grad Nite 1997
