FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
SUBJECT: ST. JEANNE DE LESTONNAC SCHOOL DRIVEWAY ACCESS - STATUS REPORT
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
On May 27, 1992, the City Councilmembers and staff received letters
from Sister Mary Salud Estrada and Sister Mary of Jesus Rodriquez
of St. Jeanne de Lestonnac School regarding the status of their
driveway access to Main Street issue.
The school indicated that Caltrans has provided a driveway design
that accommodates a fifteen foot wide driveway, which is
unacceptable to the school. The existing driveway, which has
served the school for many years, is twenty-seven feet wide. The
fifteen foot wide drive would be limited to one-way access and
emergency access. The twenty-seven foot wide driveway would
accommodate two-way traffic and emergency access.
It is the understanding of our staff that the wider driveway would
require extensive retaining wall construction at an estimated cost
of $115,000 above a narrower fifteen foot wide driveway. The
pedestrian visibility issue, as it relates to the driveway and
bridge structure, has been resolved by relocation of the sidewalk
to the northerly side of the bridge support columns.
Staff understands that the school has requested another meeting
with Ralph Neal of Caltrans, but as of this date it is unknown
whether this meeting has been held or scheduled.
