MEETING DATE: FEBRUARY 3, 2015
TO: JEFFREY C. PARKER, CITY MANAGER
FROM: DAVID A. WILSON, DIRECTOR, PARKS AND RECREATION SERVICES
SUBJECT: RENAME FUTURE TUSTIN LEGACY PARK TO VETERANS SPORTS
PARK
SUMMARY:
On November 19, 2014, the Community Services Commission amended Administrative
Policy #99.04 regarding defining guidelines for the naming of city parks and
recommended renaming the future 33 -acre Tustin Legacy Park located on Valencia
Avenue between Lansdowne and Severyn's to Veterans Sports Park.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Community Services Commission's recommendation and rename Tustin
Legacy Park to Veterans Sports Park.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None
CORRELATION TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN:
Advances Goal A of the City of Tustin Strategic Plan: Economic and Neighborhood
Development. 1) Develop critical phases of the Tustin Legacy.
BACKGROUND:
On November 4, 2014, the City Council approved a Consultant Services Agreement
(CSA) with Moore lacofano Goltsman, Inc. (MIG, Inc.) for the provision of final design and
construction documents to support the construction of the 33 -acre active park site. It is
now imperative for the future development of the park to officially name the park facility.
The Community Services Commission has recommended changing the park name to
Veterans Sports Park to commemorate the site's history as a recreational sports complex
on the former Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) Tustin. Many men and women who
served our country on the former MCAS Tustin would utilize the site to pursue
recreational opportunities when they were off -duty. They could play touch football,
soccer, softball, and baseball, as well as attend picnics and barbeques at the park.
The future park will contain many of the same, albeit updated, amenities the military
personnel enjoyed. The park will also feature a substantial Veterans Memorial that will be
designed to encourage visitors to commemorate and reflect on the efforts and sacrifices
of the men and women who served in the United States Military on the MCAS Tustin.
In addition to paying homage to the site's military history, changing the park name would
preserve Tustin Legacy Park for future naming consideration for the proposed linear park
and its connective trail system that will eventually link all of the proposed parkland
throughout the entire Legacy community.
