SUBJECT: RENAME THE FUTURE 31.5 ACRE TUSTIN LEGACY PARK
SUMMARY:
At the February 3, 2015, City Council meeting, the Council directed staff to work with
the Community Services Commission to evaluate and clarify possible park names for
the future 31.5 acre park site and provide two to three names for consideration at a
future meeting.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Community Services Commission's recommendation and rename Tustin
Legacy Park - Veterans Sports Park at Tustin Legacy.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None
CORRELATION TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN:
Advances Goal A of the Tustin Strategic Plan: Economic and Neighborhood
Development. 1). Develop critical phases of the Tustin Legacy.
BACKGROUND:
Submitted to the City Council for consideration on February 3, 2015, the Community
Services Commission recommended changing the 31.5 acre park name from Tustin
Legacy Park to Veterans Sports Park. Changing the name would commemorate the
site's history as a recreational sports complex on the former Marine Corp Air Station
(MCAS) Tustin while preserving the Tustin Legacy Park moniker for the future linear
park. The park will also feature a substantial Veterans Memorial that will encourage
park visitors to reflect on the efforts and sacrifices of the men and women who served in
the United States Military on the MCAS Tustin.
The City Council discussed and deliberated the recommended name and concluded,
"Veterans", should be retained in the park name; however, a Tustin identifier should be
included to further distinguish the park name. Staff was directed to work further with
the Community Services Commission and return to a future City Council meeting with
two to three names for consideration.
The Community Services Commission met on February 18, 2015, to discuss and
recommend two to three names for the City Council's further consideration. The
Commission's recommendations for the park name are listed below in order of
preference:
1. Veterans Sports Park at Tustin Legacy
2. Veterans Memorial Sports Park at Tustin Legacy
3. Veterans Community Park at Tustin Legacy
