Huston, City Manager Community Services Department- BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF TUSTIN - GRANT REQUEST FOR YOUTH ROLLER HOCKEY PROGRAM Recommendation: Pleasure of City Council. Background: The Boys & Girls Club of Tustin requested a $5000 grant to help underwrite program costs of this year's Youth Roller Hockey Program. Last year, Council awarded a one-time grant of $10,515.00 to the Boys and Girls Club. The funds were used to purchase start-up supplies and capital, as well as liability insurance necessary for the program's success. One hundred seventy- five kids, between the ages of five and twelve, participated; the average age being nine. This year's grant request will cover the cost for new goals, resurfacing the gym floor, small, recurring capital costs, and liability insurance. At the direction of the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the Boys & Girls Club's request at the February 15th meeting. After presentations by club staff, the Parks and Recreation Commission voted 7-0 to recommend to the Council the $5,000.00 grant be awarded to the Boys and Girls Club. The Parks and Recreation Commission and staff view this grant as the City's contribution to a partnership of insuring that this growing, popular sport continues to be accessible to the youth of Tustin. The program will be included this year in the quarterly Tustin Today in hopes of providing more effective advertising for this growing program. This item is unbudgeted in the Department's 1995-96 operating budget. A budget appropriation f~m the General Fund reserve is needed if the Council elects to support this request. :ervices sclII/a: memo/b&gclub.cc ~
