HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT SUBJEC~ SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD APPOINTMENT CONFIRMATION RECOMMENDATION: Confirm Josephine Christoff, Doreen Henson, Martin Gelband, Evelyn Olsen, and Janis Pasqualin as members of the Senior Advisory Board as recon~nended by the current Members of the Board and the Senior Center staff. BACKGROUND' The Senior Advisory Board was created to advise staff on programs for the health and well-being of senior citizens, and to insure that seniors are always a part of the program planning. Terms for membership on the Board are two years. Maintaining an active Board is a requirement of the Senior Center Bond Act which provided a $450,000 grant to help fund the construction. Qualifications for membership on the Advisory Board include involvement with Tustin Senior Programs or Community Services programs, residing in the Tustin area (Tustin Unified School District boundaries) a minimum of two years, and being at least fifty-five years of age. These qualifications were adopted by the City Council when the SeniOr Center Operating Plan was approved. Because the involvement and interest in Senior Center programming were the main qualifications for membership, the'Operating Plan suggested that the existing Committee (Board members) and the Senior Center staff interview interested applicants and recommend to the Council 'the most qualified candidates. The Senior Advisory Board was not established by ordinance. It was to function more like a committee, to provide' input and feedback to staff regarding programs. Requests for applicants were solicited through various senior groups at the Senior Center, announcements in the "Compass" (the Senior Center bi-monthly newsletter), press releases and flyers. Twenty letters of interest were received by the Center staff in response to the three positions available. With this tremendous response, and additional programs and services being added to the program curriculum at the Center, the existing members recommended increasing the size of the Board to nine members with staggered terms. Ail of the proposed candidates met the criteria and are involved in the programs and services offered at the Senior Center. With the Council's confirmation of new members, the next meeting of the Senior Advisory Board will be scheduled for May 23, 1996, at 3:00 p.m. at the Tustin Area Senior Center. The Board meets bi- monthly on the fourth Thursday. Jim'Box Manager, Human Services/ Tustin Area Senior Center , . u~n%ty Services
