SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT TO FILL VACANCY ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE TUSTIN AREA SENIOR FUND, INC.
SUMMARY:
City Council approval is required to appoint Mrs. Sherry Geyer to the Tustin Area Senior
Center Fund, Inc., pursuant to its Articles of Incorporation and its by -laws, the Tustin
Area Senior Center Fund, Inc., consists of five (5) Directors. Due to the resignation of
Marc Lopez from the Board of Directors a vacancy currently exists. As per the by -laws,
any vacancy may be filled by appointment of the City Council.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council appoint Mrs. Sherry Geyer to the Board of
Directors of the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. Sherry has been serving on
various boards in the Tustin Community since 1970, including the PTO at Guin Foss
and Columbus Tustin Schools, in addition to volunteering at both Foothill and Tustin
High School.
For the past several years, Mrs. Geyer has been devoted to serving the senior citizens
both here in Tustin and throughout the County. She currently serves as the Tustin
Senior Center Senior Advisory Board Chairperson and the Senior Citizens Advisory
Council Chairperson (SCAC) for the County of Orange and she has been on that
council for several years serving on the Health and Nutrition subcommittee.
BACKGROUND:
The Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. was established in 1985 to raise money for
the construction of the Tustin Area Senior Center. When the Center opened in 1989,
the Articles of Incorporation were amended to include acceptance of gifts and donations
to aid in capital acquisitions and operation of the Center. Some of the projects financed
by the Fund include: the reception desk located in the lobby, computer software to
produce the monthly newsletter, viewing windows in the lounge, classroom window
coverings, the redesign of classroom three into a state -of- the -art Computer Learning
Center. and the renovation of the kitchen.
According to the bylaws, the Board of Directors consists of one member from the City
Council, one member from the Senior Advisory Board, the City Manager, and two
Members -at- Large. The last annual meeting of the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund,
Inc. Board of Directors was held March 17, 2015. The current members include
Rebecca "Beckie" Gomez, Councilmember; Jeffrey C. Parker, City Manager; Marisa
Charette, Secretary; and Don Ropele, Chief Financial Officer. Due to the resignation of
former President, Marc Lopez, there is now a vacancy for a Member -at- Large: that sits
on the current Senior Advisory Board. A recommendation for Sherry Geyer was
discussed and all current Board Directors were in favor of her appointment as a
Member -at- Large.
