BACKGROUND:
The Parks and Recreation Department hosted two Veterans Memorial Design Forums
on February 9 and February 23 to receive input and suggestions from local veterans
and citizens regarding the Veterans Memorial proposed for the future Veterans Sports
Park at Tustin Legacy. From the input collected from the stakeholders attending the two
forums, design concepts progressed, and the stakeholders came to consensus and
agreed on a final design.
The preferred concept plan features a substantial memorial with the American flag and
a bronzed American eagle perched atop a large obelisk. The memorial also has several
reflection areas and gardens and big bronze placards depicting each branch of the
military. An additional smaller obelisk is included in the design concept to honor Tustin
service personnel who were killed in action. The Veterans Memorial will also include a
time capsule element and a perpetual paver program that will be administered by the
Parks and Recreation Department.
