COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
NAME ALTERNATIVES FOR 14722 NEWPORT AVENUE - NEWPORT FAMILY &
YOUTH CENTER
SUMMARY: With constmction almost underway, the facility at 14722 Newport needs a
name. Pursuant to existing policy, alternatives have been recommended by the Parks and
Recreation Commission.
RECOMMENDATION:
Pleasure of the Council.
BACKGROUND:
The 6,000 square foot facility is designed to serve the specialized needs of the residents of
southwest Tustin. Highlights of the Center will include small group counseling rooms, offices,
a computer learning lab, Head Start classrooms, an outdoor play area, a kitchen and multipurpose
rooms. A comprehensive array of recreational, educational and social service programs will be
provided through a combination of local and regional non-profit service organizations.
The City's Community Services Department will provide youth recreation programs and
administrative oversight at the Center. Orange Children and Parents Together, Inc. will provide
a licensed Head Start program for 51 students. Head Start will occupy approximately 3,00 square
feet within the facility, plus the outdoor playground area. Members organizations of Tustin Acts
for Family and Youth (TAFFY) will provide a full range of family support services.
The contract for construction of the facility was awarded at the July 15 City Council meeting.
The facility is scheduled to open in late fall. Since signage will be ordered soon, the Community
Services Department is requesting that the City Council adopt a name for the facility.
DISCUSSION & SUMMARY:
At the July .meeting the Parks and Recreation Commission was presented with a list of several
names that were developed by TAFFY Coalition members. The Commission decided upon the
following two alternatives:
.
Newport-Sycamore Neighborhood Center
South Tustin Neighborhood Center
The City Council could choose from these two alternatives or adopt another name. In the past
the Commission has provided name suggestions for new facilities to the City Council for final
approval.
At the last meeting, the City Council decided to carry this item over for further discussion.
Neither of the suggested alternative names was deemed appropriate.
