U.S. COAST GUARD REQUEST FOR HOUSENG AT MCAS-TUSTIN
RECOMMENDATION
Pleasure of the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The proposed action would result in $500,000 in savings to the City of Tustin.
BACKGROUND
The United States Coast Guard CUSCG) has requested 244 housing units on 55 acres at MCAS-Tustin.
The City believes there is available surplus Navy housing at San Pedro and Palos Verdes located less
than five miles from the USCG station to accommodate the Coast Guard. The City has agreed to fund
$500,000 in improvements at San Pedro or Palos Verdes in a phased manner, if the USCG withdraws
their request for housing at MCAS-Tustin.
The MCAS-Tustin Base Closure Task Force at a meeting on September 10, 1996 recommended that
the Tustin City Council take action to inform the Coast Guard that the previously agreed to funding for
improvements would be rescinded if the Coast Guard does not formally withdraw their request for
Tustin housing within 30 days.
