HUSTON, CITY MANAGER COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT NAME ALTERNATIVES - TUSTIN RANCH TREE PARK SUMMARY: The City Council will vote to approve a name for the property c.urrently referred to as the Tustin Ranch Tree Park. Pursuant to existing policy, name alternatives have been recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission. RECOMMENDATION: Pleasure of the Council. DISCUSSION & SUMMARY: At the November meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission was presented with names for the Tree Park developed by the ad hoc naming subcommittee. The Commission decided upon the following two alternatives listed in order of preference: 1. Cedar Grove Park 2. Cedar Tree Park The City of Tustin is the "City of Trees" and whenever possible facilities should be named for a tree. The proposed name alternatives meet the naming criteria and are appropriate for the site. The Tree Park contains 338 conifer trees, 321 trees are deodar cedars. Recreation S~~endent Director, Commtmi~rvices Attachment: Park and Recreation Facility Naming Guidelines GLM/a:grovepk.wah PARK AND RECREATION FACILITY NAMING GUIDELINES The following guidelines are listed in priority order: o . o The City of Tustin is the "City of Trees." Whenever appropriate, facilities should be named for a tree. When a tree name is not available or suitable, and whenever appropriate,, facility names invoMng a ranch theme could be used. Since Peters Canyon Wash runs through East Tustin, a canyon theme could be used for facilities developed in the Peters Canyon area. If a person pays for a facility's development in its entirety, the facility could be named for that person, or the name of his/her choice, as approved by the City Council. If none of the guidelines above are applicable, the facility could be named for a street or geographic location. The following process will be used to select the name: o . o ° o Petitions to change existing, or recommend new names of park or recreation facilities should be directed to the Park and Recreation Commission (PRC). The PRC will establish an ad hoc subcommittee of its members to consider the request. The subcommittee shall recommend no more than three names to the PRC. The PRC may, by motion, elect to forward all or none of the subcommittee's 'recommendations to the City Council. The City Council will vote to approve the name for the park or recreation facility.
