ROLLER HOCKEY SITE - A.G. CURRIE MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS COURTS
SUMMARY: Mayor Worley requested that this item be placed on the agenda for
discussion.
BACKGROUND:
The City has attempted on a couple of occasions to develop roller hockey practice facilities. Both
instances were in conjunction' with Tustin Unified School District. In 1992 a design was
dev61oped that called for the construction of a rink at Currie Middle School.
Early summer of 1994 the City again attempted to construct a rink, this time at Columbus Tustin
Park. Public outcry toward the project resulted in loss of project support by the TUSD Board of
Education.
Once again, the roller hockey cormnunity is looking for a practice facility. A large group of
parents have been before the Parks and Recreation Commission. A subcommittee of Parks and
Recreation Commissioners and Department staff has been meeting regularly with a representative
from the parent group to discuss the feasibility of developing a practice rink.
If a site were to be located, several issues would need to be addressed.
o
.
Identifying a Design & Construction funding source.
Staffing would be necessary to provide facility oversight.
Roller hockey is a high maintenance activity, requiring additional staff and supply
commitments that are currently unfunded.
Availability of parking spaces. This type of activity attracts a large turnout.
Due to the nature of the activity, a secondary source of liability insurance would
be encouraged.
RECOMMENDATION:
Pleasure of the Council.
