.,ATE: FEBRUARY 16, 1993 Inter Com
TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/FIELD SERVICES DIVISION
SUBJECT: AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR TREE TRIMMING FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR 1993
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is recommended that the City Council, at their meeting of February
16, 1993, award the contract for the subject project to West Coast
Arborists, in the amount of $198,666.00.
BACKGROUND:
Bids were opened on February 2, 1993, for the subject project and four
bids were received as follows:
Contractor Bid Amount
West Coast Arborists $198,666.00
Leonard Chaidez Tree Service $239,418.00
Landscape West, Inc. $249,606.00
Mark's Tree Services $366,768.00
The low bidder, West Coast Arborists, has submitted an extremely
competitive bid as evidenced by the supporting bids of the other
qualified contractors. West Coast Arborists references and required
licenses have been checked and verified and are appropriate for this
subject contract. References were found to be acceptable to industry
standards as referenced by the following cities: South Gate, Buena
Park, Santa Fe Springs and Mission Viejo.
The cost of this annual contract will be offset by personnel cost
savings, equipment replacement savings and other operational costs,
which will result in the elimination of two tree crews (4 people). No
layoffs will be required due to the existence of vacancies within the
Field Services Division which will allow the absorption of the excess
tree personnel within the Division.
This contract will allow for the trimming of 5,094 City trees on an
annual basis and will provide a cyclic rate that encompasses a two to
four year program. This is a one year contract with a renewable option
on a yearly basis for three additional years.
