TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
SUBJECT: BRYAN AVENUE STREET TREE CONCERN
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That the Tustin City Council authorize removal of six ficus trees
and two silk oak trees along the southerly side of Bryan Avenue
between Red Hill Avenue and Browning Avenue and replacement of
these eight trees with the routine 15 gallon size trees, of a
species to be determined by staff, that would give minimum impacts
to the sidewalks and curb and gutter.
BACKGROUND:
At the October 19, 1992, City Council meeting a concern was raised
regarding the six ficus trees along the southerly side of Bryan
Avenue in the general vicinity of the Falmouth Drive cul-de-sac and
other areas throughout the City. The concern originated from a
resident's letter directed to the City Council.
DISCUSSION:
Staff has reviewed the street tree concerns along the southerly
side of Bryan Avenue and concurs that the six ficus trees have
outgrown the sidewalk tree wells in which they were originally
planted several years ago and need to be removed and replaced. In
addition to the abovementioned ficus trees, staff has identified
two silk oak trees within the southerly parkway of Bryan Avenue and
just easterly of Red Hill Avenue, which have also outgrown the
sidewalk tree wells. These two trees should also be removed and
replaced. All of the trees are at a size which requires sidewalk
and curb and gutter repair every 3-4 years.
Mrs. McCarthy also made reference to other ficus trees in other
areas of the City. Staff is aware of these problem areas and is
putting together a program for removal and replacement which will
provide minimal impacts to the neighborhoods with respect to
landscape aesthetics.
A copy of this report has been forwarded to Mrs. McCarthy for her
information.
