FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES STAFF
SUBJECT: SPORTS PARK MASTER PLAN UPDATE
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
On September 10, 1992 the Parks and Recreation Commission
convened a Task Force workshop for the Sports Park Master Plan.
Seventy-five people attended the meeting including various
representatives from youth and adult sports organizations,
neighborhood associations and interested individuals.
Those attending the meeting broke into 15 groups of five. Each
group developed and set priorities for two lists of concerns.
One list included desired programs and facilities for the park
and one list identified park site constraints and opportunities.
After gathering input from the Task Force, the Master Plan
architect has been assembling technical information from City
Departments. These Departments include the Community
Development Department, Field Services- Di -,-inion, Ena_ineerinc
Division , Police Departmen t and Corlmur.i `t_ Services
Department.
Schoer epreser, -:G -:i'Task on the 'ask Force are Donna Burt
f roa -he Superintenden _ Office and Bill Teter f ron the
District's Maintenance and Opera ions Department. Ms. Bur"-
attended
urtattended the first Task Force meeting. At the meeting she
provided a status report on the progress on the school design.
The City `s design firm interviewed Mr . Teter regarding input for
the Sports Park. Both are on the Sports Park Task Force mailing
list and have received all communications sent to date.
The architect and staff are also coordinating the master plan
with the current planning project for the neighboring elementary
school. Randy Westrick represents the City on the School
Planning Committee. Representatives from various City
Departments and the City's architect have made presentations to
the School Planning Committee when needed. Planning for the
school is in the conceptual stage.
The architect has also met with various potential park user
groups to gather information on specific program and facility
needs they may have. These groups also provided demographic
data on their groups. The information received has included the
number of participants in their programs, the types of
facilities needed and the locations where they currently operate
their programs.
The project architect is currently taking the information
developed and drafting a Design Development Report and alternate
site plans for the Sports Park. These documents are anticipated
to be available for Task Force review within the next 30 days.
A copy of the project schedule and a map of the site is attached
for the City Council's information. Please note a change on the
Project Schedule. When the Master Plan design contract was
approved, the City Council asked that the process be
accelerated. For this reason the City Council will be asked to
adopt the Design Development Report and approve the Preliminary
Site Plan simultaneously. Staff will continue to provide the
City Council with periodic updates on the progress of the plan.
