NAME PROPOSAL - ~PORTS PARK
RE COMMENDAT ION:
Pleasure of the City Council.
BACKGROUND:
Sports Park working drawings are now 90 percent complete. These
drawings include design details for the park monument sign. To
give the project architect direction for final designs for the
sign, the park needs a name.
In February of 1989, the City Council formally adopted guidelines
for naming parks. These guidelines were developed based on
information 'and policies from other Orange County cities and with
consideration for Tustin's heritage and character. The Council
adopted the following guidelines:
le
The City of Tustin is the "City of Trees." Whenever
appropriate, parks should be named for a .tree.
·
When a tree name is not available or suitable, and
whenever appropriate, park names involving a ranch theme
could be used.
·
Since Peters Canyon Wash runs through East Tustin, a
canyon theme could be used for parks developed in the
Peters Canyon area.
·
If a person pays for a park's development in its
entirety, the park could be named for them or the name of
their choice as approved by the City Council.
·
If none of the guidelines above are applicable, the park
could be named for a street location.
These guidelines were applied when choosing names for Camino Real
Park and Laurel Glen Park.
DISCUSSION:
At the August 19, 1993 meeting the Parks and Recreation Commission
suggested names for the sports park. The names included:
·
· Tustin Sports Park
· Tustin Sports Place
· Citrus Sports Park
Most Commissioners perferredTustin Sports Park, but the Commission
could not come to concensus on one name. The Commission decided to
make suggestions only, leaving the honor of selecting a final name
to the Council.
·
Since the park naming guidelines suggest names in consideration of
localized geographic features, street names and trees, the
Commission proposed two names which depart from the guidelines.
The Sports Park will be a significant citywide facility.
Therefore, the names Tustin Sports Park and Tustin Sports Place
identify the park with the entire city, instead of a name with
localized significance.
