TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES STAFF
SUBJECT: KEN~NG CITY PARKS
RECOMMENDATION:
As recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission, do not
change the names of any City parks, but develop an informational
campaign which, will help reduce confusion about the names of
existing parks.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No fiscal impact is seen. The Community Services Department will
set up the informational campaign as part of the existing public
information program, when these materials are updated, the
additional information on the campaign will be included.
The City Council expressed concern with possible confusion
regarding the names of Centennial Park, Magnolia Tree Park and
Pepper Tree Park. The City Council asked the Parks and Recreation
Commission to consider name changes for these parks.
On April 15, 1993 the Commission considered this issue. The
Commission based the recommendation on two concerns. The first
.concern is that changing the names of parks might add to any
confusion which might exist regarding park names.
The second concern is that the names of two of the three parks in
question celebrate significant portions of Tustin's heritage.
Tustin might lose a link to the past by changing the names of
Pepper Tree Park and Centennial Park. The name, "Centennial Park"
commemorates the centennial of Tustin's founding as a village.
Pepper Tree Park was named for the historic pepper trees in the
park which Columbus Tustin planted.
The Commission suggested that adding "Tustin" to Centennial Park's
name could strengthen this tie to the past. This would portray the
name as celebrating Tustin's centennial. It would also identify
the park as located in Tustin, by that making the name less
confusing with Santa Ana's Centennial Park. This change would
require only minor changes in the park's signs and could be done
during routine sign maintenance or replacement.
