REPORTS NO. 3

TO:
FROM:
SUBJECT:
WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
STATUS REPORT: CROSSING GUARD STUDY AT THE INTERSECTION OF
BRYAN AVENUEAND BROWNING AVENUE
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council,
7, 1993, receive and file this report.
at their meeting of June
FISCkL IMPACT:
It is estimated that the cost of preparing a crossing guard study
at the noted intersection is approximately $1,500.00. Funding for
this study can be absorbed in the current Engineering Division
budget.
BACKGROUND:
At the May 17, 1993 City Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Saltarelli
expressed concern regarding school children crossing at the
intersection of Bryan Avenue and Browning Avenue to attend Veeh
Elementary School and Columbus-Tustin Middle School. It was
indicated that due to the location of the two schools south of
Bryan Avenue, the noted intersection is heavily utilized by school-
related pedestrian traffic. An exhibit showing the noted location
is attached to this report.
Engineering Division staff was directed by the City Council at the
May 17, 1993 meeting to prepare a report investigating and
addressing the need for a crossing guard at the noted location.
DISCUSSION:
The Engineering Division staff has started the traffic
investigation of the subject location and is in the process of
gathering data that will be used in analysis to determine the need
for a crossing guard.
The Tustin Police Department will be notified that we are preparing
a study of this area and we will be soliciting their input.
When the crossing guard study has been completed and analyzed, the
Engineering Division will present their findings to the City
Council for their consideration at a future meeting.
