RTJSTON, CITY MANAGER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT OLD TOWN ENTRY SIGN RECOMMENDATION Receive and File FISCAL IMPACT This is an information item. There is no fiscal impact. DISCUSSION At its last meeting, Mr. Phil Cox presented to the City Council renderings of possible new entry signs for 01d Town, along with the possible locations for their installation. Mr. Cox stated the new signs are needed to bring motorists off of First Street and Newport Avenue into the heart of Old Town. He also indicated that he felt the existing signs already in place are not effective because of their design, location and height. Staff believes Mr. Cox is correct in that the existing signs are not effective and a new concept for entry signs is needed. We believe, however, that a more comprehensive plan to deal with all of the urban design issues in the 01d Town is needed dealing not only with the entry signs, but also street furniture, landscaping, other public signage, as well as the design of new private buildings rehabilitation of existing buildings and signage. Staff also believes that input is needed from as many sources concerned with Old Town as possible, not the least of which are the property owners and business owners in Old Town. To this end, Staff has included in the proposed 1994-95 budget an allocation of $50,000 to retain urban design professionals to work with Staff and the community to develop urban design guidelines and plan for the commercial portion of Old Town. This would be similar to but more comprehensive than the City's recent efforts to complete design guidelines for the residential portion of Old Town. If the Agency includes this item in the budget, staff will issue a Redevelopment Agency Report Old Town Entry Sign August 1, 1994 Page 2 Request for Proposals and recommend a firm to the undertake this effort, as soon as pos~i~b~. /// ~ ~~ /~'/~ ~mer ~~ ~i ~ ~a ~hari)ment t ger edeve Program Manager RZ:CAS:kbc\ntrysgns.mem ,/ Agency to
