FROM: RE: MAYOR POTTS, MAYOR PRO-TEM WORLEY AND COUNCILMEMBERS THOMAS, SALTARFJ_J_I AND DOYLE KEN ROYAL, IMMEDIATE PAST CHAIRMAN, TUSTIN PRIDE ANNUAL UPDATE OF TUSTIN PRIDE The membership of Tustin Pride asked me to address the council regarding ottr activities during period when I was Chairman. It is our intention that this be an annual report, so that the council is aware of the achicv~ of Tustin Pride, as well as thc direction of the orgnni~,afion. This memorandum is to serve as a written overview of my address. BACKGROUND: As the council is probably aware, I was elected Chairman in lanuary 1994 and serv~ in that post until January 1995. I was preceded by Erin NieLsen, who was the primary founder of the group. My term was the fLrst full term for a Chairman. MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: .1) ' GRAFFYH REPORT - This report made reco~ndations to the city council, the police, the school board and the commmfi~ on how to combat graffiti and tagging. City staff and council eudorscd most of the recommendations and many of them have already implemented. 2) GRAFFITI pOSTER CONTEST - Tusfin Pridc sponsored a Graffiti Poster contest nmong the city's elementary schools. Winners were given a proclamation by the city council and the first phce winner received a bond from thc police department. GRAFFITI REMOVAL INFORMATION SHEET - Tustin Pride designed and had printed a question and answer brochure expl_nining how the city's graffiti removal program worked. 4) HOLIDAY DECORATIONS AWARDS - Yard signs were placed and certificates awarded to the homes with the best holiday light presentations. FREEWAY LANDSCAPING- We worked with CalTrans to improve the on/off ramps along thc I-5 freeway. As a result of our interest, CalTrans agreed to spend an additional $30,000 on landscaping. S)¸ 9) 10) NISSON/BROWNING SURPLUS SALE- We worked with CalTrans and the city to sell the abandoned boarded-up property at Nisson and Browning. The site has now been sold, remodeled and is the home of eight families. TREE ~CIHNG- In conjunction with the city and Great Western, Tustin Pride sponsored a sit~ to d~posit Christmas trees for recycling. ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM - We devised program to gain funds to re-imburse the city for the cost up keeping parks clean and well kept. G~,RAGE SALE INFORMATION SHEET-- Tustin Pride designed and had printed a question and answer brochure explaining the city's garage sale laws. SURVEY -- Fielded .survey on the city to residents though Tustin Today. gOALS: Thc new Chairman is Lou Bone. I :~m currently Vice Chairman. Erin Nielsen is st_ill involved as Membership Chairman. At our last meeting wc had morc than fifteen citizens attend, including members of thc Planning Commi.~sion, Parks and Recreation Commission, Chamber of Commerce, TEAM, as well as othcr civic groups. Our current goals include monitoring the problem of abandoned grocery cans, working on thc city's snipe sign problcm, making and donating sand bags in prcparation for the next hcavy rain sca.son, a weed abatement progrsm, tree planting, and remodeling awards.
