SUSJ5C~ STATUS REPORT - COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATION
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
In October, 1994 the Board of Education appointed a. Community
Advisory Committee to investigate the feasibility of establishing
a Recreation Department or Commission for the Tustin Unified School
District. Gary Magill, Recreation Supervisor was appointed as the
City staff liaison to the committee. The Advisory Committee has
completed its investigation and will present conclusions and
recommendations to the School Board at the meeting scheduled on
~February 27, 1995.
One of the major concerns presented by the Committee is that the
boundaries of the District are larger than the City so that the
recreational needs of District residents outside of the City are
not being met. The Committee recommended that a Recreation
Department be set up within the School District to coordinate
recreation activities District wide. Any Recreation Department,
program or commission would have to be completely self-supporting
from user fees, grants or donations.
At the present time there is no single organization to coordinate
recreation concerns inVolving the County of Orange, the City of
Tustin and the Tustin Unified School District. The Committee has~
recommended that the School District enter into a Memorandum of
Understanding with both the City and the County.
Staff will continue to update the City Council with any further
developments. A copy of the report from the Advisory Committee
will be available after the Board meeting on February 27.
