HUSTON, CITY MANAGER pUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION CHRIST~ TREE RECYCLING PR~ RECOI~~ATION This report is for informational purposes only. It is recommended that it be received and filed. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact with this program. 8~CXGROU~D~U~D DISCUSS~0S The contract with Great Western Reclamation (GWR) requires that all solid waste collected in the City be transported to a material recovery facility (HRF) to be separated for recycling. Since this recycling program started in 1991, each holiday season GWRhas made provisions for Christmas tree recycling at theMRFwith a local green waste composting company. Trees are collected at curbside with the regular trash and transported to the MRFwherethey are. separated and taken to the green waste facility. This year we will continue thecurbside collection, but will expand the Christmas Tree Recycling Program to include a drop-off location. On the weekend of January 7th and 8th, 1995, GWR will provide a large 40-yard roll-off bin located in the parking area at Columbus-Tustin Park at Prospect Avenue and Irvine Boulevard. Residents will be able to bring their Christmas trees, cleaned of any decorations, to the site and drop them off between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both days. All trees collected will then be transported by GWR directly to a composting facility for chipping and mulching. The drop-off location will be staffed by volunteers through Tustin Pride, as well .as a representative from the City staff. Information about this program will be distributed to both continental Cable and Dimension Cable to be posted on the Community Bulletin Board channels, as well as to the local newspapers for publication. CONCLUSION Based upon the number of trees recovered the curbside collection of Christmas trees has been successful; however, Staff feels that expanding the program to include a one weekend drop-off location will increase public awareness and sgpport for ,the City's~ecycling programs.
