REPORTS NO. 1

)ATE: MAY 29, 1991
TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
SUBJECT: EL CAMINO REAL/RED HILL AVENUE LEFT TURN MOVEMENTS
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and File
BACKGROUND:
At the May 20, 1991 City Council meeting a concern was raised
regarding the issuance of a traffic ticket for failure to obey the
left turn signal for westbound El Camino Real to southbound Red
Hill Avenue and staff was requested to investigate the matter.
DISCUSSION:
The traffic signal system at El Camino Real and Red Hill Avenue
consists of the following left turn indicators:
1. Protected left turn phases (arrows) for both northbound
and southbound Red Hill Avenue to westbound E1 Camino
Real and eastbound El Camino Real respectively.
2. No protected left turn phases (arrows) for either
westbound or eastbound E1 Camino Real to
southbound Red Hill Avenue or northbound Red
Hill Avenue respectively.
The- westbound El Camino Real motorists would turn left to
southbound Red Hill Avenue on the green ball phase while yielding
to oncoming eastbound E1 Camino Real traffic.
In order to pursue this matter further it would be helpful to
determine the exact date of the issuance of the traffic ticket in
question so that we may determine as to what violation the
motorists was cited. Perhaps, the motorists could be requested to
call myself and provide the above mentioned information.
