HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF SUBJECT: STATUS REPORT; KIDS CENTER AT VEER SCHOOL RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. BACKGROUND: At the June 3, 1991 meeting, the City Council asked that the status of the current after school program operated by the City at Veeh School be agendized for the June 17, 1991 meeting. Presently, the City operates after school care programs at Veeh and Beswick Schools. The City contracts with The Kids Center to provide direct program services at both schools. These programs have reputations for providing high quality and affordable services to families with children enrolled at Veeh and Beswick Schools. DISCUSSION: While no arrangements for fall of 1991 have been completed, the School District has indicated to The Kids Center staff and to City staff that, if parents are happy with existing programs, the District will work with the City, the service providers, and parents to continue the programs. At Veeh School, the City, School District, and the Kids Center are working together to make arrangements to place a portable classroom on that campus for child care. The use of portable classrooms is necessary since classroom space is not available for child care programs. The installation of portables could result in registration fees increasing by as much as 30 percent. The parents with whom City staff has discussed such increases have stated that, while they do not like the increase, they understand that it would be necessary to keep the program. Parents have told the City staff that they would like to see the Kids Centers retained at schools where they currently offer service. Plans are also underway to expand the scope of services offered at The Kids Centers to include before school care, and before afternoon kindergarten care in addition to the after school programs for kindergartners and grade schoolers now offered. At Beswick School, the School District indicates that the Kids center will probably be assigned the same space in 1991/92 that was used during 1990/91 school year. Further updates on the status of the Veeh and Beswick Schools Kids Centers will be provided to the Council in July as arrangements with the School District become more concrete. Susan M.
