TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
SUBJECT: CITIZEN CONCERN - FIRE HYDRANT PAINTING
RECOMMENDATION
Receive and File.
BACKGROUND
At a previous City Council meeting, Mr. Dick Yaberg raised a
concern regarding the painting of fire hydrants throughout the
service area of the Tustin Water System. He raised a concern that
the hydrants are deteriorating from the rust conditions resulting
from the lack of painting.
DISCUSSION
The City Water Service does have an on-going program for the
painting of fire hydrants. This program is a continuous operation
and provides for painting of hydrants in the following order:
1. All east -west arterial streets .
2. All north -south arterial streets.
3. All remaining residential streets and easements divided
into quadrants.
The fire hydrant painting program is accomplished with employees
that have been placed on a light duty work program and/or with
employees on the regular work program. Due to the current and past
workloads and available staff, the fire hydrant painting operation
has not been a priority program.
Staff will continue to pursue our present operation and will
accelerate this program whenever staff is available for this work.
Water Service staff has contacted Mr. Yaberg on this matter and
explained our current operation.
