HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: POLICE DEPARTMENT SUBJECT: ASSET FORFEITURE APPROPRIATIONS Recommendation That Council appropriate $62,000 from the existing Narcotic Asset Forfeiture Trust Fund to purchase the attached list of items. Background On 6/2/86, Resolution 86-69 was adopted which authorized the expenditure of monies garnered through Asset Forfeiture Funds Program. This money was to be used to assist with narcotics investigations. Appropriation of these monies would over the next six months enable us to enhance our Department's effectiveness in outreach in the community. Thanks for your consideration. W. DOUGLAS FRANKS Chief of Police WDF:dh ASSET FORFEITURE APPROPRIATIONS 1. Computer Equipment $16,500. 3 Hewlett Packard Vectra Personal Computer work stations, including printers and equipment stands. These work stations will be placed in areas which currently do not have access to computer work- stations which is common or convenient. Acquisition of this equipment will greatly enhance the efficiency of the Department. 2. Southwest Regional Partnership Program $10,000. These funds will be utilized for the purchasing Southwest equipment and incidentals for Neighborhood Partnership Program. Additionally, funds will be expended for use in various youth outreach programs for printing and other youth related activities. 3. Portable Telephones (2) $ 21500. These funds will be used to purchase small cellular telephones which will be used at major crime scenes or for continuation of major invs st gations in These newer particular those involving narcotic model phones have double the standby time and double the talk time of our existing equipment. In recent major incidents it was found to be a significant drawback for ongoing and continuing investigations. These phone would alleviate that problem. 4. Police Vehicle $23,000. This item was approved by the Council reg a used regular budget meeting. The vehicle will be to accommodate increased marked unit patrol in high density crime areas. There will be no increase to capital budget expenditures. 5. Police Radios $10,000. These funds will be used to equip and update existing police vehicles with contemporary radio systems.
