HUSTON, CITY MANAGER FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION SUBJECT: I-5/SR-55 INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTION, STAGE II CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE UPDATE RECOMMENDATION Receive and File. DISCUSSION A brief update of the status and schedule of the I-5/SR-55 Interchange Project follows. The overall project schedule has slipped about three months. Start-up of the project was delayed until street widening and revisions to area signalization, intended to mitigate alternate routes for the project, were completed. Once begun, the interchange project work has remained well within projected time allowances. Irvine Boulevard at SR -55 Bridge Reconstruction This structure is scheduled to be complete and open to traffic in mid to late December 1991. The Irvine Boulevard bridge across SR - 55 in Tustin, and the Fourth Street bridge across I-5 in Santa Ana are being reconstructed at the same time. It is possible that the Irvine Boulevard Structure will be completed prior to the Fourth Street Structure. If that is the case, and if traffic detouring is not a problem, then the Irvine Boulevard crossing may be opened ahead of the Fourth Street crossing, perhaps early December 1991. First Street at SR -55 Bridge Reconstruction After the Irvine Boulevard and Fourth Street structures have been opened for traffic, it will be necessary to reverse the detour traffic flow before work can begin on the First Street bridge reconstruction at SR -55. It is estimated that First Street will be closed and the removal of that SR -55 crossing will begin by February 1992. The reconstruction of the First Street bridge will take 12 to 15 months to complete. As work on this Stage II portion of the I-5/SR-55 interchange reconstruction continues, Caltrans field engineering staff are working on the details to dove -tail that current project into the soon to begin Stage III portion of the interchange reconstruction. Stage III is scheduled to begin construction in October 1991. Completion of the I-5/SR-55 interchange is set for mid- 1995. Bob Ledendecker Director of Public Works/City Engineer BL:lmh:bridge
