SUBJECT: NAME PROPOSAL - NEIGHBORHOOD PARK TRACT 12763 IN TUSTIN RANCH
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt name of Laurel Glen Park for the three acre Neighborhood Park
in Tract 12763 as recommended by the Neighborhood Park Task Force,
the Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Community Services
Staff.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Neighborhood Park Task Force members suggested the following
names for the park in no priority order:
1. Jacaranda Park
2. Saddleback Mountain View Park
3. Sycamore Glen Park
4. Laurel Glen Park
BACKGROUND:
The Parks and Recreation Commission convened the Neighborhood Park
Task Force on May 1, 1990, for the design of the three acre
neighborhood park located on Heritage and Myford in the Tustin
Ranch. Over several months the Task Force, by consensus, chose the
basic amenities for the park and approved the preliminary site
plan.
Working drawings were completed in November of 1990. The project
has completed the first review in the City plan check process, and
has been returned to the designer for corrections.
In February of 1989, the Council formally adopted guidelines for
naming parks. These guidelines were developed based on information
and policies from other Orange County cities and were discussed at
length with the Commission. The following were the adopted
policies:
1. The city of Tustin is the "City of Trees". Whenever
appropriate, parks should be named for a tree.
2. When a tree name is not available or suitable, and
whenever appropriate, park names involving a ranch theme
could be used.
3. Since Peters Canyon Wash runs through East Tustin, a
canyon theme could be used for parks developed in the
Peters Canyon area.
•4. If a person pays for a park's development in its
entirety, the park could be named for them or the name of
their choice, as approved by the City Council.
5. If none of the guidelines above are applicable, the park
could be named for a street location.
Laurel Glen Park meets the recommended guidelines.
At the February 21, 1991 Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting,
the Commission considered the names listed. After discussion, the
Commissioners recommended that the name be Laurel Glen, and that
staff contact the designer to make sure that a Desert Laurel Tree
be included on the site. Staff has since contacted Cardoza,
Dillalo, Harrington, Inc., the design firm and a Desert Laurel will
be included in the plan.
