FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/ENGINEERING DIVISION
SUBJECT: UNDERGROUNDING OF OVERHEAD UTILITIES ON MAIN STREET
BETWEEN "C" STREET AND THE ROUTE 55 FREEWAY
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
At their meeting of January 7, 1991, the City Council requested
that this item of undergrounding the overhead utilities on Main
Street between "C" Street and the Route 55 Freeway be agendized
for the January 21, 1991.
This request came as a result of the visual and physical
conflicts of the existing overhead facilities and the recently
installed decorative street lights.
DISCUSSION:
Staff has reviewed this area of Main Street on a preliminary
basis with respect to the undergrounding of the facilities and
estimates the following:
* Cost of undergrounding the overhead facilities between
"C" Street and the Route 55 Freeway is estimated at
$340,000.
* Between 30 and 35 residences and/or churches will be
required to convert their overhead service facilities
to underground services. No costs for these conversions
have been established at this time.
The undergrounding of the overhead facilities would include
Edison Company, Pacific Bell and Continental Cablevision
facilities.
The cost of this undergrounding could be funded by Edison
Company Rule 20A funds. However, at the time of the preparation
of this report, the Tustin balance of available Rule 20A funds
is unknown. Staff will attempt to have this information
available at the January 21, 1991 City Council meeting.
If it is contemplated to utilize any other source of City funds,
it is recommended that this project be reviewed and evaluated at
the time the 1991-92 Capital Improvement Program budget is
presented to the City Council.
