INFORMATION REPORT -
I-5 WIDENING TUSTIN RANCH ROAD TO NEWPORT AVENUE
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file.
BACKGROUND:
At the January 7, 1991 City Council meeting, staff was directed
to send a letter to Caltrans requesting that the remaining work
on the Tustin Ranch Road Interchange Project be accelerated by
working overtime to minimize the impacts to the proposed ramp
closures at the Red Hill Interchange and the reduction of Red
Hill Avenue to one travel lane in each direction. Staff made
verbal contact with Caltrans on January 8, 1991 and was informed
that the overtime work had already been authorized and would
commence immediately. The contractor has been working double
shifts and weekends since that time. Consequently, staff has
delayed writing the letter as requested.
The following is a recap of the latest critical dates for
closures and openings of Tustin Related facilities:
January 14, 1991 Closure of northbound I-5 on-ramp
from Red Hill Avenue.
January 14, 1991 Closure of southbound I-5 off -ramp
to Red Hill Avenue.
January 17, 1991 Opening of Tustin Ranch Road
(two lanes each direction over
I-5 freeway) between Walnut Avenue
and El Camino Real.
January 23, 1991 Opening of northbound I-5 off -ramp to
Tustin Ranch Road.
January 23, 1991 Closure of northbound I-5 off -ramp
to Red Hill Avenue.
January 23, 1991 Closure of southbound I-5 on-ramp
from Red Hill Avenue.
End of February, 1991 Open southbound I-5 on-ramp from
Tustin Ranch Road.
February 1, 1991 Reduction of through travel lanes on
Red Hi 11 Avenue from two ( 2 ) to one (1)
in each direction.
Caltrans has been dealing with the Tustin Police Department for
special traffic direction/enforcement in the vicinity of Newport
Avenue and the I-5 Freeway. As the traffic patterns stabilize,
both Caltrans and City staff will be adjusting traffic signal
timing along Newport Avenue to maximize the traffic flows.
