HUSTON, CITY MANAGER COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT NAME PROPOSAL-NE IGtlBORNOOO PARK TRACT 12345, 1USTIN RANCH RECOItMENDATION · ii m The first park in Tustin Ranch be named Camino Real Park, and that this park should be dedicated in honor of Officer Waldron Karp, Tustin's only police officer killed in the line of duty, as recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Community Services staff. BACKGROUND ii The first park in Tustin Ranch is a 4.25 acre neighborhood passive park. The park features a unique shade structure-picnic area, a customed-designed restroom, and eucalyptus and magnolia trees. The park is located on Parkcenter Lane and E1 Camino Real Streets. Currently Neighborhood Park Tract 12345 is under construction. The contractor needs the name of the park by the first part of March in order to complete the sign and finish construction on schedule. The City Council has the final approval of the name. Several names could be used involving the park's location and physical make-up. Eucalyptus Park, Tustin Ranch Park, E1 Camino Real Park,-or Sycamore Ridge Park, are all names related in some way to the park. Attached for your review is a list of suggested names for future park sites in Tustin Ranch. The Police Department had requested that this particular park site be named to honor Officer Waldron Karp, the only Tustin police officer killed in the line of duty. The Parks and Recreation Commission felt it would be more appropriate to dedicate the park in honor Of Officer Karp by placing a special monument plaque on the park site. At the February 16, 1989, meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Commissioners discussed possible names for the park. Staff had recommended that the park be named E1 Al isal Park for the many sycamore groves that impressed Columbus Tustin when he came to the area; however, the Parks and Recreation Commission liked the name and felt it would be more appropriate for one of the · large community parks. Using the adopted guideli.nes, the park can be named for a street location. The Commission decided upon the names Camino Real Park, as their first choice, and E1 Camino Park as their second choice. Both names are variations of the street on which the park is located. The Commission also felt that the park should be NAME.
