NAME PROPOSAL-NE IGtlBORNOOO PARK TRACT 12345,
1USTIN RANCH
RECOItMENDATION
· ii m
The first park in Tustin Ranch be named Camino Real Park, and that this park
should be dedicated in honor of Officer Waldron Karp, Tustin's only police officer
killed in the line of duty, as recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission
and the Community Services staff.
BACKGROUND
ii
The first park in Tustin Ranch is a 4.25 acre neighborhood passive park. The park
features a unique shade structure-picnic area, a customed-designed restroom, and
eucalyptus and magnolia trees. The park is located on Parkcenter Lane and E1
Camino Real Streets.
Currently Neighborhood Park Tract 12345 is under construction. The contractor
needs the name of the park by the first part of March in order to complete the
sign and finish construction on schedule. The City Council has the final approval
of the name.
Several names could be used involving the park's location and physical make-up.
Eucalyptus Park, Tustin Ranch Park, E1 Camino Real Park,-or Sycamore Ridge Park,
are all names related in some way to the park. Attached for your review is a list
of suggested names for future park sites in Tustin Ranch.
The Police Department had requested that this particular park site be named to
honor Officer Waldron Karp, the only Tustin police officer killed in the line of
duty. The Parks and Recreation Commission felt it would be more appropriate to
dedicate the park in honor Of Officer Karp by placing a special monument plaque on
the park site.
At the February 16, 1989, meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the
Commissioners discussed possible names for the park. Staff had recommended that
the park be named E1 Al isal Park for the many sycamore groves that impressed
Columbus Tustin when he came to the area; however, the Parks and Recreation
Commission liked the name and felt it would be more appropriate for one of the
· large community parks.
Using the adopted guideli.nes, the park can be named for a street location. The
Commission decided upon the names Camino Real Park, as their first choice, and E1
Camino Park as their second choice. Both names are variations of the street on
which the park is located. The Commission also felt that the park should be
