WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
POLICE DEPARTMENT
CLETS/NCIC INTERFACE SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE SYSTEM
Recommendation
The City Council authorize the expenditure of $35,000 for the
purchase of the California Law Enforcement Teletype System (CLETS)
and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) interface software
and hardware system from Public Safety Systems, Inc., 4401 Nicole
Drive, Lanham, Maryland 20706.
Background
The purchase of the CLETS/NCIC interface software and hardware
system was approved by the City Council in the 1988-89 capital
budget--S18,355 for the purchase and $16,645 for the required
development work, equipment, and computer system modifications.
The system will greatly enhance the Police Department's ability to
access various county, state, and federal information systems. It
will also allow us to utilize our existing Hewlett-Packard
terminals and printers, which will reduce the annual teletype and
terminal lease charges by over $11,000. At this rate, the cost of
the system will be completely amortized in three years.
Public Safety Systems, Inc. is the sole vendor. The new system
provided by Public Safety Systems, Inc. will directly interface
with our Records Management System (ALERT) and with any other
system we might install in the future. No other system can
interface in a like manner without requiring a complete change of
computer software.
Respectfully submitted,
FRED WAKEFIELD
Acting Chief of Police
