HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC 6 TREE REMOVALS 01-15-90DATE: TO: FROM: SUBJECT: January 15, 1990 WILLIAM HUSTON, CITY MANAGER PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/FIELD SERVICES REQUEST FOR T, ZEE REMOVALS RECOMMENDATION: CONSENT CALENDAR NO. 6 1-15-90 Inter - Com That the City Council, at their regular meeting of January 2, 1990, approve the Public Works Department's recommendations on tree removal requests, which are more specifically as follows: LOCATION TYPE RECOMMENDATION 14172 Raleigh Place Magnolia Approve Request 17381 Roseleaf Avenue Ficus Approve Request 17411 Parker Drive Ficus Approve Request 14522 Hyannisport Eucalyptus Deny Request 560 South Pacific Pecan Deny Request BACKROUND: Attached, as an exhibit, is a list of tree removal requests which were received by the Public Works Department through December 26, 1989. The requests are for the removal of trees located in the public right of way. Each location has been investigated by a member of the City's tree maintenance staff. Staff has rendered a recommendation, prepared cost estimates, and in residential areas, surveyed adjacent property owners to assess neighborhood opinion. This information is contained in the specific request tabulated in the attached exhibit. Trees approved for removal, by Council, shall be removed and replaced by City crews. Replacements will be with a tree of acceptable species from the City's approved tree list. Staff Evaluation: A large Magnolia tree that has pushed out the curb & cutter over three inches. The base of the tree is within two feet or curb. Neighbor Response: Yes - 2 No - 0 No Reply - 3 Recommendation: That the City approve request. That the tree not be replaced at this time. Estimated Cost: The estimated cost to remove the tree is: $300.00 Applicant: Gay M. Hamilton Address: 17381 Roseleaf Avenue Telephone: (714) 543-6666 Request: That the City remove one Ficus tree in the parkway at City expense. Staff Evaluation: This is a large Ficus Nitida tree with an extensive root system that has damaged the main water line at least once. This tree is too close to a water meter. Neighbor Response: Yes - 2 No - 0 No Reply - 3 Recommendation: That the request be approved. That the City replace tree with a Crape Myrtle at a location away from existing water meter box. This Eucalyptus tree is large but healthy. The curb and cutter are in good condition. However, the sidewalk has been ground down once, due to root damage. This is a large Pecan tree that has been topped by Southern California Edison. The tree has some dead branches. Yes - 2 No - 0 No Reply - 3 That the City deny request. That the City remove the dead branches. If tree shows signs of die back of more branches in the future, then I would recommend removal.
