RECOMMENDATION:
That the Tustin City Council implement alternative no. 2 and authorize
the' installation of one additional "No U -Turn" sign in the Newport
Avenue raised median just north of the Sizzler Restaurant driveway.
'f•: BACKGROUND:
At their Llanuary 15, 1990 meeting, the City Council requested staff to
review that portion of Newport Avenue between El Camino Real and the I-5
freeway with respect to the northbound Newport U-turn movements to
southbound Newport to gain access to the freeway on-ramp. The problem
' appears to be with motorists running through the breaks in the median
''G1',.'Island and conflicting with southbound Newport Avenue left movements
i o the Sizzler parking lot.
' sting conditions include a "No U-turn" sign mounted in the median
nd sou`ierly of the Sizzler driveway and a painted continuous left
w media; between the two raised median islands on Newport Avenue

4. Install either raised medians and/or other devices which
would physically block the U-turn or left turns from
northbound Newport Avenue. Left turns from Newport Avenue to
the Sizzler Restaurant would still be provided.
As a first step solution to the U-turn problem, it is suggested that
alternative no. 2 be implemented until such time it is determined as to
what the final traffic circulation patterns to the Sizzler will be with
the loss of the parking spaces as a result of the freeway construction.
